LCSD Speech & Language Department Raises Funds for Diaper Bank
Thursday, August 4, 2016 -
One morning in mid-May, Long Branch Elementary speech teacher Stephanie Cross was reading the local newspaper when she came across an article about the newly established CNY Diaper Bank. As she delved into the story, she was surprised to learn that most assistance programs do not provide diapers to families in need.
“It’s such a simple thing,” Cross said, adding that she couldn’t imagine not being able to afford diapers and having to find an alternative.
As she continued to read the article she was moved by the efforts of three Central New York women – Michela Hugo, Peggy Liuzzi and Kate Canada – who recently created the CNY Diaper Bank to ensure that local families have access to an adequate supply of diapers for their children. A member of the National Diaper Bank Network, the 501(c)3 centralizes the fund-raising and distribution of free diapers to families through local food pantries, childcare centers, social service agencies and shelters.
Cross shared the article with her fellow Liverpool Central School District Speech and Language Department teachers, who were just as moved by the organization’s efforts. The tight-knit colleagues decided to help by raising $225.
Hugo was grateful for the donation and in an e-mail told Cross the funds would help the CNY Diaper Bank purchase more than 2,000 diapers for local children.
“People like you and your colleagues are helping the CNY Diaper Bank expand its reach and make an impact on a larger number of families in the area,” Hugo wrote. “Thank you for believing that all babies deserve to have clean diapers and for taking action to ensure that more do.”
