LHS Hosts Youth Activation Committee Summit and Training
Thursday, February 1, 2018 -
Liverpool High School recently hosted more than 150 students from across Central New York for the 2018 Youth Activation Committee Summit and Training.
Representatives from Special Olympics New York and the New York State Public High School Athletic Association were on hand to provide YAC advisors and member schools with a comprehensive overview of Project Unify, best practices and guiding principles of unified sports, and instruction on how to build a dynamic, inclusive and sustainable program at their school.
A Youth Activation Committee (YAC) consists of youth leaders with and without intellectual disabilities from the same school or community who strategize and plan activities. The YAC takes responsibility for the promotion and sustainability of the inclusive sports program.
Last school year, six CNY schools (Baldwinsville, East Syracuse Minoa, Fayetteville-Manlius, Fulton, Liverpool and West Genesee) participated in a unified basketball league that brought together students with and without intellectual disabilities for the opportunity to compete on one team. This year area schools are participating in a unified bowling league.
