LHS Tech Students Build Picnic Tables for NPE

Thursday, June 9, 2016 -

Earlier this school year, Nate Perry Elementary Principal Dana Ziegler mentioned to Liverpool lhsnpepicnictables1Central School District Superintendent Dr. Mark F. Potter that her school’s picnic tables were in bad shape.

NPE students often utilize the tables for special lunches or activities, and Ziegler hoped there was a way for the elementary school to get them replaced.

Potter suggested that Ziegler reach out to Liverpool High School technology teacher Casey Ostrander to see if his Product Design and Development class might be interested in building several picnic tables as part of a class project. Ostrander told Ziegler his students would be happy to help out.

The LHS students started the design process in January, focusing first on the jigs and fixtures needed to hold the picnic tables together then finalizing a design template that allowed them to build almost an entire picnic table in one 50-minute class block.

Ostrander said the project not only benefitted NPE and its students, but the high school students as well. They learned a lot about the manufacturing process from material use and ergonomics to the importance of efficiency when it comes to mass production.

In the end, the LHS Product Design and Development students built six new picnic tables for the elementary school. They recently stopped by NPE to meet with the fifth-graders who will benefit from the tables next school year.

To celebrate the partnership, the LHS and NPE students participated in a rousing game of kickball and enjoyed some freeze pops on a warm day.
