NPE, LHS Collaborate on Peer Mentoring Program
Monday, November 30, 2015 -
Nate Perry Elementary and Liverpool High School recently teamed up for a new Peer Mentoring program that will bring together students who might never cross paths otherwise.
NPE special education teacher Valerie Manzo, NPE first-grade teacher Gabriella Martini, LHS social studies teacher James Chrisfield and LHS English teacher Michele Crego are working together on this weekly program which matches up LHS seniors and NPE third- through sixth-graders. The students spend time together participating in a number of activities – such as reading, playing on the playground, working on Pinterest projects, doing their homework, or just talking to each other.
Manzo said she was inspired to bring this program to NPE after attending a professional development workshop that touched on poverty and how mentoring programs can help children. While the program is only a few weeks old, the teachers have found that the students are already becoming fast friends.
“The program is really focused on building relationships,” Manzo said.
