SRE Honors Late Teacher with Special Reading Corner
Thursday, December 20, 2018 -
When long-time Soule Road Elementary third-grade teacher Margaret Sardella passed away in January 2017, she left an indelible impression on the lives of everyone around her. Her kind and positive spirit made her a beloved member of the Liverpool community.
To honor that legacy, SRE created Mrs. Sardella’s Reading Corner in the school’s library. The area features chairs, stools, a coffee table, and a special bookshelf featuring the color scheme of yellow (Sardella’s favorite color), orange and blue (the school’s colors). The bookshelf features Sardella’s photo and a pair of yellow sneakers (since college she always owned a pair). The books, many of which are coffee table books, each feature a special bookplate in her honor.
SRE students can visit the reading corner when their class visits the library but also can request short visits to read if their school work is done.
The reading corner was made possible through donations from the Sardella family and the SRE Parent Teacher Organization. Thrivent Financial and wealth advisor Kyle Mumpton, the husband of SRE speech teacher Beth Mumpton, provided the school with a grant to purchase books. The Barnes & Noble store on Route 31 generously provided a discount for those books.
SRE hopes to sustain the reading corner through future book donations. Parents have the option of donating a book on their child’s birthday in lieu of birthday treats. Those interested in donating books for Mrs. Sardella’s Reading Corner, please contact the school at 315-453-1280.
