SRM Seventh-Grader Qualifies for State Geography Bee
Thursday, March 3, 2016 -
Soule Road Middle seventh-grader Owen Jarosz knows his facts about world geography, U.S. states, “geo extremes” and national parks.
In fact, he knows so much about those topics that Jarosz is one approximately 100 students from across New York State who will compete during the state level of the National Geographic Bee on April 1. The competition will be held at the New York State Museum in Albany.
One champion from each state and territory will advance to the national competition, which will be held May 22 to 25 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washington D.C.
In January, Jarosz was named the winner of the annual SRM National Geographic Bee. As part of the bee, SRM seventh- and eighth-graders were asked to take a qualifying test during their social studies classes. The top 40 scorers were then narrowed down to the top 10 after a second written exam, and those students competed in the school’s oral round of the competition. Jarosz then took a 60-minute written examination to qualify for the state competition.
