Friday, January 29, 2016 -
Soule Road Middle seventh-grader Owen Jarosz recently was named the winner of the annual SRM National Geographic Bee.
As part of the bee, SRM seventh- and eighth-graders were asked to take a qualifying test during their social studies classes. The top 40 scorers were then narrowed down to the top 10 after a second written exam. Those 10 students – eighth-grader Payton Furr, seventh-grader Ian Hallenbeck, eighth-grader James Murphy, eighth-grader Derek Zurenda, eighth-grader Braelin Kuhn, eighth-grader Natalie Petit, eighth-grader Rosie DenBleyker, eighth-grader Gurcharan Grewal, eighth-grader Kaleb Trombley, eighth-grader LeAnne Stanley and Jarosz – then competed in the oral round of the competition, answering questions about topics such as world geography, U.S. states, “geo extremes” and national parks.
Jarosz now advances to the next level of the National Geographic Bee that consists of a 60-minute written examination to determine competitors for the New York State competition.
