Liverpool CSD Middle Level Regents Exam Info

Dear Liverpool CSD Middle School Families,

As many of you are likely aware, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) recently canceled all Regents exams that are not required by the United States Department of Education (USDE). NYSED submitted a request to the federal government to waive all Regents exams, but that request was denied for a second time by USDE. As a result, all New York State public schools must still administer the following Regents exams this June: Algebra 1, Earth Science, Living Environment (Biology), and English Language Arts.

Liverpool Central School District middle school students taking Algebra 1 and Biology/Living Environment will have the opportunity to take the Regents exam that corresponds to those courses.

For those students enrolled in a course that is offering a Regents exam in June, it is important to note the following:

  • While we encourage all students to take the Regents Exam that corresponds to the courses they are taking, students will not be forced to take the exam.
  • Students who pass their course, but choose not to take the corresponding Regents exam will have an E (Exempt) recorded on their transcript.
  • While Regents Exams are not mandatory this school year, the faculty and administration feel there are still benefits to taking an exam. Preparing and sitting for an important exam like the Regents will better prepare our students for future exams. As will be outlined below, students will now have an opportunity to take the Regents and not have the score recorded on their transcript unless they choose to do so. Sitting for a Regents exam this school year provides our students with an opportunity to experience the administration of a Regents Examination in a low-stakes environment.
  • Once students who take an exam receive their scores, they will have the option to either have the exam score or an E (Exempt) placed on their transcript. There are three scoring options for students to consider once they take a Regents exam this school year:
    • If a student passes the exam and wants the score to appear on their transcript, we will do so.
    • If a student passes their class and fails the corresponding Regents exam, an E (Exempt) will be placed on their transcript unless they ask for the failing grade to appear.
    • If a student passes the test, but does not score as high as they would have liked, they can choose to have an E (Exempt) placed on their transcript instead of the exam score.
  • The New York State Regents Exam for 8th grade students is outlined below:
    • Living Environment: Tuesday, June 22
    • Algebra 1: Wednesday, June 23

Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, school counselor, or principal if you have any additional questions.
