Liverpool CSD to Host Special Olympics at LHS

The Liverpool Central School District is pleased to announce that it will host its own Special Olympics on June 2 at the Liverpool High School Stadium.

Opening ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m. with a closing ceremony at 12:30 p.m.

Many may wonder why the district decided to host its own Special Olympics this year instead of participating in the Special Olympics hosted by the North Syracuse Central School District.

There are actually benefits to hosting the Special Olympics at LHS.

First and foremost, by hosting the Special Olympics at home, more Liverpool K-12 students can participate. Due to the size of the event at North Syracuse, school districts were not able to bring every student that wanted to compete. In addition, some Liverpool students had a difficult time with the noise and large crowds at the North Syracuse event, making it stressful for them.

What makes hosting even better is that our Liverpool High School students will now have the opportunity to volunteer at the event.

This decision to change has nothing to do with “dollars & cents,” but simply making more opportunities for our students. Liverpool CSD teachers have been asking that the district host its own Special Olympics for some time, and other Central New York school districts, like Baldwinsville, have made this change as well.

We are grateful to North Syracuse for hosting us at their Special Olympics for so many years and creating so many wonderful memories for our students.

Sincerely,

Daniel G. Henner
Superintendent of Schools
