NYSED Nominates LHS Senior for Presidential Scholars Program

The New York State Education Department recently announced that Liverpool High School senior Joelle Wike is one of 25 seniors selected for recommendation to the U.S Presidential Scholars program.

Wike, who was nominated by NYS Assemblyman Al Stirpe, will now have the opportunity to apply for the program at the national level. She was named a career and technical education nominee based on her academic rigor, technical competence and employability skills.

“I am so proud of Joelle Wike’s accomplishments, and I am happy that she is receiving well-deserved recognition through the Presidential Scholars Career and Technical Education Program, said Assemblyman Stirpe. “As a student at Liverpool High School, she receives all-county recognition in two sports, works part-time as a lifeguard at the YMCA, and is a High Honor student taking Advanced Placement and college-level courses.”

“We are fortunate that this accomplished student has selected to enroll in Liverpool’s Early Childhood Education Program. Joelle has a gift of working with children, combining a warm, welcoming temperament with her knowledge of the best teaching practices and classroom experience. She brings both creativity and rigor to her students. It was an honor to nominate Joelle as a Presidential Scholar and I wish her the best as she moves through the competition process,” he added.

Presidential Scholar recognition is one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students who represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in young people. Each year, the Commission on Presidential Scholars selects scholars from among the top high school seniors in the country based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations, and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and commitment to high ideals.
